Children's Teeth

We believe all children deserve the best dental care to achieve healthy pain-free mouths and beautiful smiles for life. We spend time teaching children how best to look after their teeth and offer gentle dental care.

We encourage parents to bring in their children as soon as possible. This will let them get used to the noises, smells and surroundings and prepare them for future visits. The earlier these visits begin, the more relaxed the children will be. We can advise on the best use of toothpastes, high and low risk diets, use of protective tooth coatings, tooth development and if necessary refer for an orthodontic assessment.

Should your child need treatment, we will ensure that they are treated with the utmost care and make the visit as untraumatic as possible. If fillings are required, we will always try to provide mercury free fillings wherever possible.

If your child plays a contact sport please let us know as it is important that they have a customised mouthguard to protect them from dental trauma.

What do I do if I knock a tooth out?

Firstly, if you can find the tooth and it is clean, put it back into the socket yourself. If not:

  • Don´t panic! We can help!
  • Don´t hold the tooth by the root as teeth are surrounded by fragile ligaments which need to be kept intact if the tooth is to be repositioned.
  • Don´t clean the tooth with disinfectant or water and let it dry out
  • Do put it straight into a cup of milk, or hold it in your mouth
  • Do go to the dentist/hospital as soon as possible
  • Do take painkillers such as Calpol if necessary

The sooner the tooth is replaced, the better the chances of success.

As dental professionals we believe in preventative dental care and encourage our patients to bring their children to the practice from an early age. Regular check-ups from a young age will ensure children don't suffer from untreated dental decay with devastating effects to their growing dentition.

There are a number of preventative treatments that our team can provide for children:
  1. Fluoride applications are a safe and effective way to safeguard your child's growing teeth from developing decay. The fluoride is painted onto the surface of the teeth, helping to mineralise them.
  2. Tooth-coloured fissure sealants are applied to the biting surfaces of children's teeth to prevent decay.
  3. Studies have shown that the younger your child is when attending their first dental appointment, even if just for a check-up, the more likely they are to have a positive experience and to grow up unafraid of the dentist. Our team will take special care of your child to make them feel safe and cared for.
  4. Treating a child from a young age also allows the dentist to spot early signs of underbites, cross bites or overbites developing. As with most dental problems, the sooner you can start to treat it, the quicker it can be resolved.

Prevention is always better than cure, so call the practice today to make an appointment for your child.
