How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants are fast becoming the most popular way of replacing missing teeth. At Gwersyllt Dental Care, we transform our patients’ lives by replacing their lost teeth with a permanent and natural-looking solution. Poorly fitted dentures are a thing of the past when you invest in long-lasting dental implants.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a permanent solution to replace missing and lost teeth. They offer a comfortable, reliable and natural appearing replacement to natural teeth. They are colour matched to your teeth, meaning that your dental implants won’t even be recognised by other people.

A dental implant is actually made up of three different parts:

The implant itself

This is a titanium screw that is surgically fitted into your jaw bone, to provide a stable foundation for your replacement tooth.

The abutment

The abutment is what connects the titanium screw to the prosthetic. Your jaw bone must regrow around the implant before the abutment is fitted.

The prosthetic

This is the part of the implant that you will be able to see, and is your natural looking replacement to your missing tooth or teeth. A prosthetic could be a crown, bridge or even a full arch denture.

Why should you replace missing teeth?

If your tooth falls out through trauma, neglect or is surgically removed for a medical reason, it is important to replace it as soon as possible. When you lose a tooth, over time, the surrounding teeth will start to move position. This will lead to you having misaligned teeth.

Another reason to replace any missing teeth is to prevent premature ageing that is caused by bone loss. To keep your jaw bone in a strong and good condition, it needs to be stimulated. This is done by general day to day activities like eating and speaking. However, when there are no teeth sitting within the jaw bone this does not happen. Over time, as the bone deteriorates, it will lead to a change in face shape, making you appear older.

How long do dental implants typically last?

Dental implants have an extremely high success rate of 98%. This means that 98% of dental implants fitted heal correctly and are able to support a prosthetic for a lifetime. In the large majority of cases, dental implants will last a lifetime. However, they should be treated in the same way as natural teeth and an excellent oral hygiene routine is absolutely necessary.

What factors affect the longevity of dental implants?

Although in theory, dental implants should last you a lifetime, there are some factors that may impact their longevity. These will be discussed at your initial appointment with the implantologist, but they include:

  • Bone quality
  • Smoking
  • Drinking excessive amount of alcohol
  • Underlying medical conditions
  • Certain types of medication
